WK5 Fantasy Football Ranking
* The Fantasy Football WK1 Rankings Edge Rusher Chart would traditionally contain just the 3-4 outside linebackers and 4-3 defensive ends from the NFL’s two-base defensive schemes. But at times, for whatever reason, some of the main sites list some 3-4 defensive end. Not to mention some strongside linebackers from the 4-3 scheme. And one of those main sites that have been engaging IDP owners for quite a few years with the designated Edge Rusher position as an option is ESPN.COM.
So although this author doesn’t personally consider those 3-4 defensive ends a part of the true Edge Rushers, we will set these charts by whom they list as such. Because even if the position has been around for some time, on a few sites. It’s still in the process of gaining traction by IDP owners. And there still needs to be a baseline set somehow. So what better way to do it than with the old school, and one of the originals, but ESPN.
Note, this listing of ESPN Edge Rushers may not reflect this author’s Edge Rushers rankings or the Gridiron Rating player ratings. But until it is a full-fledge position used across the board and a player standard is set. We can’t ignore what the users of the charts and IDP owners may have access too. We’ll also mention that the Edge Rusher formula for these charts adds at least one additional step over the traditional five.

SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: It’s turned out to be a stable group, without Danielle Hunter, after all. And versus the everything is marked as on paper results versus the Seahawks. But Odenigo lost momentum last week so we’ll only go barely solid for him. And note that Wonnum is starting to make an impact but at a very limited amount of playing time. We need those snap count numbers to jump up before we can really start gauging in IDP usage out of him, 25% last contest just isn’t enough to trust.

Falcons Edge Rushers

☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
Takkarist McKinley
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
John Cominsky
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
Charles Harris
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: Stable enough to make the call we avoid this week. On paper isn’t right versus the Panthers and Takk lost momentum after sitting out weeks 3 and 4. We already had some trust issues and this isn’t the contest to test those IDP waters.
Panthers Edge Rushers
Brian Burns
☆☆☆☆☆ 4/5
Stephen Weatherly
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Yetur Gross-Matos
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Marquis Haynes
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: Burns is stable and getting what the matchups offer and is the only edge player getting 70%+ snap counts on average per game. We haven’t had a solid reason to add any upside yet to his line automatically. So on paper versus the Falcons, this is on paper base results and we should expect some upside based on those.
Weatherly is barely getting it done, if at all. But so far is next in line in snaps per game averaging around 60%. So we’ll go on the on-paper low-end result and go “barely” solid. There should be enough upside via this matchup he gets something but risky on what that’ll be.
Gross-Matos really overachieved last contest beyond the on-paper results. And again with a “catch 22” for us to consider, he did it with only 37% of the snaps. An unreliable number but we’ll note that it is creeping upward so we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and go “barely” solid as well. Never know if someone needs to reach this week with all the COVID stuff and bye-weeks. We just don’t suggest going here unless desperate until we hit at least 50% of the snaps. And preferably 60%+ of the snaps when it comes to defensive ends.
Saints Edge Rushers
Cameron Jordan
☆☆☆☆☆ 3.5/5
Trey Hendrickson (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Marcus Davenport (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Carl Granderson
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: Davenport was limited again as of Thursday’s practice with a toe and elbow issue. Hendrickson had not practiced as of Thursday. Owners will want to keep, and eye on the reports, as well as remember what we had mentioned a few weeks ago in the charts.
The Saints have a lot of huge draft stock in Davenport and he was the clear starter last year over Hendrickson. And when both get healthy and happen to get on the field the same contest, it might take some time but Davenport will likely push Hendrickson way down in snap counts. Of course, that is unless they find a way to utilize Hendrickson after performing so well in place of Davenport. If you ask this guy, they should get him involved with the interior defensive lineman if at all possible.

Cowboys Edge Rushers
Aldon Smith
☆☆☆☆☆ 5/5
DeMarcus Lawrence (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Everson Griffen
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Randy Gregory
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: First, a bit of drama likely going to affect everything sooner or later. Gregory (suspension) will participate at practice Wednesday (Oct. 7th), Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports. Gregory will ease into things Wednesday and will be eligible to play his first game of the year Oct. 25 at Washington. When this happens, the Cowboys will have to choose between four good to great edge rushers and who gets the most playing time. Smith should of course be safe.
Lawerence and Griffen both played 51% of the snaps while Smith got 72%, just a note to explain the marks in this on paper matchup versus the Giants. It’s tough to trust either completely.
Giants Edge Rushers
Lorenzo Carter
☆☆☆☆☆ 3/5
Kyler Fackrell (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 3/5
Markus Golden
☆☆☆☆☆ 1.5/5
Oshane Ximines (IR)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: Fackrell (neck) was limited today in practice, and has been all week. Considering he went down with the neck injury and then returned to play in the last contest, this is likely limited to keep him healthy. With Ximines hitting I.R. Golden should see an uptick in snaps and possibly become more relevant down the road. If Fackrell was to be out, Golden could be a real sneaky play this contest versus the Cowboys, who on paper can’t protect the edge very well.
Eagles Edge Rushers
Brandon Graham
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.5/5
Derek Barnett
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.5/5
Josh Sweat
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Genard Avery
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: Last contest it was the first time this season Graham was shut down in a favorable matchup on paper. And for the last few years, he has pretty well been able to get what the matchup offers on paper. So we are not holding one down game against him. With that said, Sweat is still overachieving considering his snap count percentages each contest. But with just 37% in week four, we can’t give him anymore upside in this middle of the pack matchup versus the Steelers.
Washington’s Edge Rushers
Chase Young (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Montez Sweat
☆☆☆☆☆ 1.5/5
Ryan Kerrigan
☆☆☆☆☆ 1.5/5
Ryan Anderson
☆☆☆☆☆ 1.5/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: Young (groin) returned to practice this week in a limited fashion. And for reasons this guy can’t locate anywhere, Sweat went from 70% of the snaps in week 3 to 47% in week 4. And when they didn’t have young on the field, it’s confusing. Instead, they gave Anderson and Kerrigan the majority of the snaps with just 51%. And rotated two depth players that haven’t been apart of the rotation before.
Needless to say, we have concerns about this, week versus the Rams. And feel we should go as far as avoiding the situation altogether until things level out again. That actually could be said about Young as well, who is a game-time decision and could be sat out just to make sure he is over this groin injury that is known to linger. Not to mention that the on-paper base, without Young’s upside momentum before the injury, is barely solid at best.
NFC West
Cardinals Edge Rushers
Chandler Jones
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Haason Reddick
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Devon Kennard (O)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Kylie Fitts
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: One would think that going up versus the Jets maybe be a favorable matchup for this unit. but considering that Jones has fallen off the IDP map, and Hassan has not overachieved in matchups, we’re skeptical. The Jets don’t allow the production on the edge it would take to boost these guys up and on paper, we’ll roll with those results.
Rams Edge Rushers
Aaron Donald
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Leonard Floyd
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Samson Ebukam
☆☆☆☆☆ 1.5/5
Terrell Lewis
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: This last matchup versus the Giants was dishearting, to say the least. The man guys getting the snaps didn’t produce but the part-time rotational guys did. And even with Donald, if it wasn’t for his sack added to his two assisted tackles it would have been a complete bust for him in a really solid matchup. And this is now twice in four contests, he has been shut down like this. Our older studs aren’t getting it done as it is across the board like they have been.
Hopefully, we aren’t adding his name to that list anytime soon. And because of his situational, we’re not including any upside going forward into his formula for his on-paper results. And versus the Wahington Team this week it’s showing up on paper and marked accordingly.
The rookie Lewis will be active for the first time this season. And is just another thing to watch as this unit could stand a little help.
49ers Edge Rushers
Kerry Hyder
☆☆☆☆☆ 4/5
Arik Armstead
☆☆☆☆☆ 3.5/5
Dion Jordan
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Ziggy Ansah (O)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: Wow, Ziggy just joined the team and saw his first real action and is already out. This unit has been cursed this season with injuries and such. As for Hyder and Armstead, they have been holding their own to a nice degree. And versus the Dolphins they’ll get the chance on paper to keep rolling.
Seahawks Edge Rushers
Benson Mayowa
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
L.J. Collier
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
Alton Robinson
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
Shaquen Griffen
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
SEE NEW CHART KEY ABOVE -Advice/Note: Mayowa is barely getting it done when it comes to the strength of the matchups. And they haven’t released the Rookie Robinson completely yet, who looks like he would hold value if the would give him the snaps. So as it sits on paper this is an avoid versus the Vikings who allow the least amount of production to the edge rushers at this moment, a “safe” no brainer.
