* The Fantasy Football WK1 Rankings Edge Rusher Chart would traditionally contain just the 3-4 outside linebackers and 4-3 defensive ends from the NFL’s two-base defensive schemes. But at times, for whatever reason, some of the main sites list some 3-4 defensive end. Not to mention some strongside linebackers from the 4-3 scheme. And one of those main sites that have been engaging IDP owners for quite a few years with the designated Edge Rusher position as an option is ESPN.COM.
So although this author doesn’t personally consider those 3-4 defensive ends a part of the true Edge Rushers, we will set these charts by whom they list as such. Because even if the position has been around for some time, on a few sites. It’s still in the process of gaining traction by IDP owners. And there still needs to be a baseline set somehow. So what better way to do it than with the old school, and one of the originals, but ESPN.
Note, this listing of ESPN Edge Rushers may not reflect this author’s Edge Rushers rankings or the Gridiron Rating player ratings. But until it is a full-fledge position used across the board and a player standard is set. We can’t ignore what the users of the charts and IDP owners may have access too. We’ll also mention that the Edge Rusher formula for these charts adds at least one additional step over the traditional five.
Week 4 / NFC Edge Rushers
NFC North
Bears Edge Rushers
Khalil Mack (Q)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.5/5
Robert Quinn
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Barkevious Mingo
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
James Vaughters
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
Advice/Note: In the end, they eased Quinn back in mixing him and Mingo in a timeshare. And adding a sack, mack hit his mark. This week doesn’t look any better than last week with the Colts. So we’ll bump the breaks on Quinn still until we see more snaps out of him and call Mack “just” solid.
Lions Edge Rushers
Trey Flowers
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.5/5
Romeo Okwara
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.5/5
Julian Okwara (Q)
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
Austin Bryant (O)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Advice/Note: Okwara overachieved last contest by a hair and Flowers got what the formula indicated. With that said, it doesn’t get much better in week four versus the Saints. We’ll roll with the on-paper “barely” solid. And any production isn’t likely to contain a sack.
I’d like to add, my apologies, and why I say users should always read the notes if there are any. Via the notes, I wrote the matchup was weak versus the Cardinals but didn’t change or remark the stars to reflect that. I truly hope it didn’t cost anyone a win. Notes are always very important if there are some because I’ve put thoughts to the matchup in detail. And I’m only human and can make a mistake if distracted by life or possibly a member asking for assistance via an open line on Twitter.
Packers Edge Rushers
Za’Darius Smith (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 3.5/5
Preston Smith
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Rashan Gary (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Jonathan Garvin
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
Advice/Note: At this time and after talking about the situation last week, Preston Smith no longer has any consideration as a starter until further notice. If you would like to know why, please refer to the detailed notes in week three. Be sure to watch the injury reports as the other Smith has been limited with a leg injury all week. And if he is out we aren’t sure if Preston can be trusted as the guy who would replace him on the weakside. So our best option may be to just look elsewhere if Za’Darius is out. Which on paper this matchup is really strong. But considering the leg injury, we aren’t adding a lot of upsides. Someone will produce here, trouble is who is healthy and picking that guy(s) out with how snaps and early season history has gone.
Vikings Edge Rushers
Yannick Ngakoue
☆☆☆☆☆ 3/5
Ifeadi Odenigbo
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.5/5
Eddie Yarbrough
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
Danielle Hunter (IR)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Advice/Note: Nothing to really note among the healthy players, and suggest we roll with this “just” solid matchup on paper versus the Texans with a touch of upside.
Hunter owners update, he has been advised by a second opinion to sit out all of this season because of his herniated disc. No announcement at the time of this publication if he will.
NFC south
Falcons Edge Rushers
Dante Fowler Jr. (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Takkarist McKinley (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
John Cominsky
☆☆☆☆☆ 1.5/5
Charles Harris
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
Advice/Note: Takk ended up being out and Fowler went down fairly early in week three. Right now the reports have been they are limited this week in practice. Our on paper results versus the Packers indicate we avoid this weak matchup either way it goes.
Panthers Edge Rushers
Brian Burns
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.5/5
Yetur Gross-Matos
☆☆☆☆☆ 1.5/5
Stephen Weatherly
☆☆☆☆☆ 1.5/5
Marquis Haynes
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
Advice/Note: Gross-Matos saw about 30% of the snaps in his return in week three, and right now our only viable target is indeed Burns. Unfortunately, his matchup is barely solid versus the Cardinals. He’ll have to work extra hard to impress this contest and we shouldn’t count on a sack.
Saints Edge Rushers
Cameron Jordan
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.4/5
Trey Hendrickson (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.4/5
Carl Granderson
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
Marcus Davenport (O)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Advice/Note: And of course, after writing a huge note about Davenport entering the picture, he didn’t play (elbow) and now called out this week with an added toe injury. We’ll mark Jordan and Hendricks as the results require versus the Lions and add the word barely. Which is a shock after so many years of giving Jordan his stud upside. And that word “barely” being added, was barely added, as the on-paper results are pretty week and we should consider other options.
Buccaneers Edge Rushers
Jason Pierre-Paul
☆☆☆☆☆ 4.5/5
Shaquil Barrett
☆☆☆☆☆ 4.5/5
Anthony Nelson
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
Quinton Bell
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
Advice/Note: Nothing prettier than this contest this week versus the Chargers, enjoy!
NFC East
Cowboys Edge Rushers
Aldon Smith
☆☆☆☆☆ 3/5
DeMarcus Lawrence (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.4/5
Everson Griffen
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.4/5
Randy Gregory (O)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Advice/Notes: Lawerence banged up his knee and only played about 40% of the snaps in week three. As of now, they are saying he is good to go versus the Browns, we’ll mark it as it comes out on paper. Noting that everyone but Smith is barely.
Giants Edge Rushers
Lorenzo Carter
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.5/5
Kyler Fackrell
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Markus Golden
☆☆☆☆☆ 1.5/5
Oshane Ximines
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
Advice/Note: Nothing new other than in the last contest Golden cut into the snaps of Carter and Fackrell a little. We’ll roll with just solid for Carter versus the Rams and leave the other two on our benches.
Eagles Edge Rushers
Brandon Graham
☆☆☆☆☆ 3.5/5
Derek Barnett
☆☆☆☆☆ 3/5
Josh Sweat
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.5/5
Vinny Curry (IR)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Advice/Note: Sweat did garner more of the snaps in week three after impressing early on. And because of that trend, it hampers the other guys a little. but this is a really strong matchup off the edge versus the 49ers in week four. So to be safe we’ll mark everyone safely and expect some upside for graham and Barnett. And until it breaks wide open say “just” solid on Sweat this time around. The matchup is strong enough to support all three to get some production. But Sweat remains the risky play.
Washington’s Edge Rushers
Montez Sweat
☆☆☆☆☆ 2.5/5
Ryan Kerrigan
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Ryan Anderson
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Chase Young (O)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Advice/Note: With Young going down the other three saw spikes in snaps. But the only one on-paper player to consider is Sweat at this time. And that matchup versus the Ravens is “just” solid. And could have been considered borderline “barely”.
NFC West
Cardinals Edge Rushers
Chandler Jones
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Devon Kennard (?)
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Haason Reddick
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Kylie Fitts
☆☆☆☆☆ 0.5/5
Advice/Note: A moment of silence please for a long time stud edge rusher we need to put to rest. Because whether it is by scheme or by age (doubt that), Jones is no longer a sure thing. Kennard and Reddick are the producers off the edge now and we need to move on from Jones until further notice. Reportedly Kennard should be more doubtful than questionable because his hand injury has kept him out all week. And for this contest, even if he was in or out, on paper versus the Panthers this looks like a reach to expect more than an upper weak contest. There isn’t any real positive in testing this result.
Rams Edge Rushers
Aaron Donald
☆☆☆☆☆ 4.5/5
Leonard Floyd
☆☆☆☆☆ 3.5/5
Samson Ebukam
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Terrell Lewis (O)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Advice/Note: As it’s worked out, we’ll just say that Donald and Ford will enjoy productive games versus the Giants edge OLs.
49ers Edge Rushers
Kerry Hyder
☆☆☆☆☆ 3.5/5
Arik Armstead
☆☆☆☆☆ 3/5
Dion Jordan
☆☆☆☆☆ 2/5
Ziggy Ansah
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
Dee Ford (IR)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Nick Bosa (IR)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Advice/Note: With Ford and Bosa on I.R., it looks like Hyder gained the advantage in positioning. Hopefully, that becomes even clearer after this contest. And we have a couple of other players coming into play as well to keep an eye on. But for this contest versus the Eagles we’ll roll with the known in a very strong matchup on paper. We may not be marking these as if Ford and Bosa were the guys, but it’ll be tough to do that considering the situation from this point onward.
Seahawks Edge Rushers
Benson Mayowa
☆☆☆☆☆ 3/5
L.J. Collier
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
Alton Robinson
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
Shaquen Griffen
☆☆☆☆☆ 1/5
Bruce Irvin (IR)
☆☆☆☆☆ 0/5
Advice/Note: Due to the fluid situation with injuries we have restacked the depth chart with this group. And it’s like starting over as things play out the next few weeks. The one that looks secure is Mayowa. The one in this writer’s opinion to keep an eye on is the rookie, Robinson. The fifth-round rookie made a nice impression in week three with limited snaps. And considering the rest of the names on this list, he should start seeing more time on the field and the chance to impress again. This matchup versus the Dolphins would be as good as time as any for the Seahawks to start that process.
And if I had to pick a pony to overachieve this contest, my money is on the rookie. But who knows how Pete carrols sees it. So for now we just wait and see. We’ll also add, this is a strong matchup for Mayowa, but he is just shy right now in snap counts to mark him any higher.
