Super Bowl LIV Quick Hit: Anthony Hitchens

by | Feb 2, 2020

Welcome to the Super Bowl LIV quick hits presented by Gridiron Ratings. Where we’ll be talking about either a Kansa City or San Francisco player that will be key in Sunday’s game. And will either need to step it up or do what they do best to help win the biggest game of the year. This year’s contest is as intriguing as it gets when it comes to personal on both sides of the football. And we’re going to break down some of those situations that will determine who’ll bring the Lombardi trophy home.

Super Bowl LIV

Linebacker Anthony Hitchens #53

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, they have one of the poorest inside linebackers in the league. And Anthony Hitchens will have to play the best game of his life to make any impact. His situation heading into Sunday’s game could be explained by his poor stats from the 2019 regular season. Or the fact as the main guy in the middle of the defense, they have elected to use a rotation. One that includes him leaving the field as the Chiefs try to get the best personnel available in play.

According to PFF, his overall grade of 46.3 is 75th among the qualifying linebackers in the league. And considering the Football Outsiders have the 49ers as their number one overall team at running the ball, fingers crossed the Chiefs get the right combination at the right time. It is highly unlikely that if the 49ers abandoned the run game it was because of Hitchens.

With that being said, Hitchen’s doesn’t make game-changing type plays normally, and he is an average tackler. And Chief fans will need him to be at his best, but that still might not be enough. So here is to the hope that the defensive line can get the job done. Or that the Cheifs offense and Patrick Mahomes can get off to a hot start.
