Rookie Reminder: Travis Etienne

What are your feelings on Rookies? Some love them, some think they are a luxury and some stay away from them. But we can all agree every year there will be breakout stars, and it’s up to you to decide if you want any on your fantasy team(s). This year there are quite a few rookies who are getting people excited. Whether it’s an offensive or defensive player you are looking to target, there are plenty to choose from. Here are some thoughts on the 2021 rookie class.

Travis Etienne Jr. out of Clemson had been ranked as the #3 rookie running back. Etienne is an accomplished college running back winning many awards including:  2 ACC player of the year, 2 ACC offensive player of the year, 2 consensus all American, 3 first team all ACC and 1 third team all ACC . His college numbers are impressive and should get you excited for what he will do in the NFL.

Through his college years he averaged 7.2 yards per carry and 11.3 yards per reception. In the 2020 covid season he had 168 rushing attempts. He averaged 5.4 yards per carry, same as Derek Henry in 2020. If you’re looking for a big playmaker Etienne may be the answer. His explosive playmaking abilities coupled with his speed make him a instant threat.

Jaguars selected Etienne with the the 25th pick of the draft pairing him with Trevor Lawrence, his quarterback at Clemson, where they were very successful together. It’s been reported Etienne spent rookie camp as wide receiver, with coach Meyer saying he hopes to develop Etienne into a hybrid player.

“I’m going to be a playmaker here. They brought me in here to make plays and not just plays, but big plays, and that’s what I’m going to do” -Travis Etienne

On the first day of practice, it was evident that the Jaguars want Etienne to be a pass catcher,  as he was utilized heavily in that role. Etienne and Robinson are also reported to be getting equal shares.

So what can Etienne offer you when it comes to your fantasy football team? If he’s training and can adapt to the hybrid role, that is very good news for fantasy football managers. The sky is the limit in this offense. Can he produce this year in this offense? Yes he can, while there is plenty of talent on this team, Etienne should still see his fair share of playing-time.

Etiennes ADP is 57 right now, he is a huge value in dynasty leagues, and in redraft he’d be a fantastic pick up in the 4th-5th round.   Etienne could do very well if Coach Meyer uses him the way he says he plans to.
