* The Fantasy Football WK1 Rankings Edge Rusher Chart would traditionally contain just the 3-4 outside linebackers and 4-3 defensive ends from the NFL’s two-base defensive schemes. But at times, for whatever reason, some of the main sites list some 3-4 defensive end. Not to mention some strongside linebackers from the 4-3 scheme. And one of those main sites that have been engaging IDP owners for quite a few years with the designated Edge Rusher position as an option is ESPN.COM.

So although this author doesn’t personally consider those 3-4 defensive ends a part of the true Edge Rushers, we will set these charts by whom they list as such. Because even if the position has been around for some time, on a few sites. It’s still in the process of gaining traction by IDP owners. And there still needs to be a baseline set somehow. So what better way to do it than with the old school, and one of the originals, but ESPN.

Note, this listing of ESPN Edge Rushers may not reflect this author’s Edge Rushers rankings or the Gridiron Rating player ratings. But until it is a full-fledge position used across the board and a player standard is set. We can’t ignore what the users of the charts and IDP owners may have access too. We’ll also mention that the Edge Rusher formula for these charts adds at least one additional step over the traditional five.

Week 1 / Edge Rushers

All the charts are only available for free for the first three weeks of the season. We hope you consider joining the G.R. family.

The User of any chart must read the notes or they are setting themselves up to make a mistake and do their own due diligence on injuries and such.

AFC NORTH

 Ravens Edge Rushers

Matthew Judon
2/5
Pernell McPhee
2/5
Jaylon Ferguson
1/5
Tyus Bowser
0.5/5

Advice/Note: As marked, via the formula there maybe decent tackles but the offs of sacks aren’t great.

Bengals Edge Rushers

Carlos Dunlap
2.5/5
Sam Hubbard
2.5/5
Khalid Kareem
1/5
Carl Lawson
0.5/5

Advice/Note: We’re in the middle of the pack with the Chargers coming to Cincinnati. If Hubbard has it in him we’ll see a little more than marked via the formula.

 Browns Edge Rushers

Myles Garrett
2.5/5
Olivier Vernon
1.5/5
Adrian Clayborn
1/5
Porter Gustin
0.5/5

Advice/Note: Garret’s return is going to be a tough one on paper. The ravens were bottom five in allowing points to the edge Rushers and we all know that Baltimore’s QB Lamar Jackson has some wheels. We don’t sit studs but don’t expect him to wow the sack stats.

Steelers Edge Rushers

T.J. Watt
4/5
Bud Dupree
3/5
Alex Highsmith
1/5
Olasunkanmi Adeniyi
0.5/5

Advice/Note: The matchup versus the Giants are strong for the Steelers Edge Rushers, and they are going to have a solid day with upside via the on-paper matchup.

AFC south

Texans Edge Rushers

J.J. Watt
0/5
Whitney Mercilus
0/5
Brennan Scarlett
0/5
Jonathan Greenard
0/5
Carlos Watkins
0/5

Advice/Note: Texans played/plays Thrsaday night. They are located on the Thursday Edition Charts. And BONUS note, it’s came to our attention that at least one major fantasy football site does have J.J. Watt listed as an Edge Rusher. Even if they don’t have other 3-4 DE’s in other schemes listed as such. We’ll make the exception and add him here and the DL chart starting week two until further notice.

Colts Edge Rushers

Justin Houston
3.5/5
Denico Autry
3/5
Al-Quadin Muhammad
2.5/5
Kemoko Turay (O)
0/5

Advice/Note: And we quote…. “Turay was placed on the physically unable to perform list for the regular season Saturday and will miss the first six weeks, the Kokomo Tribune reports. Spin: Denico Autry and Al-Quadin Muhammad will get more playing time at defensive end opposite Justin Houston as a result. Turay is working his way back from ankle surgery in October and wasn’t able to make enough progress during training camp.”…..if this helps. Houstons our target, and Autry got just a bit high mark over Muhammed via youth and talent. But i suggest no one goes here week one unless desperate. The Jags do allow some nice points to the DEs, but wow this is risky.

 Jaquars Edge Rushers

Josh Allen
2.5/5
K'Lavon Chaisson
1.5/5
Adam Gotsis
1/5
Dawuane Smoot
0.5/5

Advice/Note: On paper, via the formula, this isn’t as bad of a matchup as one would think versus the solid Colt’s O-line. Now owners just need to figure out if the risk versus the reward in week one is worth it. There are still a lot of unknowns in this situation.

Titans Edge Rushers

Harold Landry III
4/5
Jadeveon Clowney
3.5/5
Vic Beasley, Jr. (Q)
1/5
Kamalei Correa
0.5/5

Advice/Note: It’s a great matchup on paper, one concern is that Clowney is listed as an OLB in this 3-4 scheme. It’s affect on Landry could be relevant but for this first week, we’ll give Landry his edge because this Clowney signing was very recent.

AFC East

 Bills Edge Rushers

Trent Murphy
3/5
Jerry Hughes
3/5
Mario Addison
3/5
Darryl Johnson
1/5

Advice/Note: It’s a strong matchup via the formula for the Bills ER versus the Jets OLs. There is a twist with Buffalo adding Addison this offseason and one that IDP owners will want to know holds some risk. The top three may be in heavy rotation, hence, making week one a pick your pony situation on who produces the best. And it also knocks all three down to 3 stars (high-solid) from nearly strong.

Dolphins Edge Rushers

Kyle Van Noy
2.5/5
Shaq Lawson
2/5
Emmanuel Ogbah
1/5
Andrew Van Ginkel
0.5/5

Advice/Note: This one is going to be a tough one for the Miami ER’s versus the Patriots. And Van Noy may not exactly stack the sack or tackle for loss type edger rusher stats. We’re likely looking at combined tackle number, but those count to so anything else is a bonus week one.

 Patriots Edge Rushers

John Simon
4/5
Chase Winovich (Q)
3.5/5
Anfernee Jennings
2/5
Shilique Calhoun
1/5

Advice/Note: The matchup is right and we have a IDP player we need to watch. If Simon is on waiver wires we just may see a rush to pick him up after week one plays out. “If” he assumes the major “Jamie Collins” role as this writer expects, he’ll be one hot player for 2020 when the matchup is right.

Jets Edge Rushers

Jordan Jenkins
2/5
Tarell Basham
1.5/5
Kyle Phillips
1/5
Jordan Willis
0.5/5

Advice/Note: Short and sweet, on paper this is a matchup via the formula as well as overall talent at this time.

AFC west

 Broncos Edge Rushers

Bradley Chubb
3.5/5
Jeremiah Attaochu
1/5
Malik Reed
0.5/5
Von Miller (IR)
0/5

Advice/Note: With miller on I.R. and likely out for the season, we have to imagine Chubb will thrive at the weakside rusher position in 2020. And the only reason he didn’t receive 4 plus stars versus the Titans was the fact he is coming off a 2019 season ending injury.

Chiefs Edge Rushers

Frank Clark
0/5
Alex Okafor (Q)
0/5
Tanoh Kpassagnon
0/5
Mike Danna
0/5

Advice/Note: Played Thursday and/or the matchup is located on the Thursday Edition of chart.

Chargers Edge Rushers

Joey Bosa
4/5
Melvin Ingram III
3/5
Uchenna Nwosu
1/5
Isaac Rochell
0.5/5

Advice/Note: Although on paper the Bengals are a “just solid” match up on paper, when we cycle the formula and add in talent levels plus the Bengals have a rookie QB, Bosa and Ingram get a pump in week one.

Raiders Edge Rushers

Maxx Crosby
3.5/5
Clelin Ferrell
2/5
Carl Nassib
1/5
Arden Key
0.5/5

Advice/Note: On paper this is one of the best matchups via the formula of all the Edge Rusher squads in week one versus the Panthers. But there were other considerations to be taken that hammper everything. One, we got to see Maxx play every down this year as he started to in 2019. Two, Ferrell needs to be the guy they drafted him to be. So at this point we roll with as designated to be safe about it.

Fantasy Football WK1 Rankings

NFC North

Bears Edge Rushers

Khalil Mack (Q)
2/5
Robert Quinn (D)
2/5
Barkevious Mingo
0.5/5
Mario Edwards Jr.
0.5/5

Advice/Note: It’s far from a perfect situation for any Bear ER owners versus the Lions. And as we always suggest, don’t sit a stud. But on paper, if you own another stud other than Mack, you may want to go that way instead of the matchup is better. The Lions OLs are better than some might think of at protecting the edge. Hence, last year Mack recorded just five combined tackles in two contests versus the Lions with no other productive stats.

Lions Edge Rushers

Trey Flowers
2.5/5
Romeo Okwara
2/5
Julian Okwara (Q)
1.5/5
Austin Bryant (O)
0/5

Advice/Note:  Week one just isn’t all that appealing across the board in this lions versus Bears contest. But at least we know that Flowers got to the QB both contests last season when they went at it and via the formula that gives him a little bit of an edge. And it’ll be interesting to see what the Okwara brothers brings to the table in 2020.

Packers Edge Rushers

Za'Darius Smith
3/5
Preston Smith
2.5/5
Rashan Gary
1/5
Jonathan Garvin
0.5/5

Advice/Note: On paper, this one isn’t as appealing on paper until we add in the situational of the Packers defense versus the Vikings. It then becomes solid enough to roll with Smith and Smith, noting that second year Gary may just get a bit more playing time this year which could cut into opportunities for the Smiths.

Vikings Edge Rushers

Yannick Ngakoue
2/5
Ifeadi Odenigbo
2/5
D.J. Wonnum
0.5/5
Danielle Hunter (IR)
0/5

Advice/Note: Wow, Hunter can return from IR on Sept. 28, but his injury status remains uncertain and muddies the outlook for those who drafted him early. As for the rest of the group, someone needs to step up and we don’t actually advise testing these waters week one via the formula applied.

NFC south

Falcons Edge Rushers

Dante Fowler Jr.
3/5
Takkarist McKinley
2/5
John Cominsky
1/5
Charles Harris (O)
0/5

Advice/Note: Simple enough we are going with the formula straight out as everything came in-line. It’s too bad we can’t trust Takk, this contest versus the Seahawks has some real apeal.

Panthers Edge Rushers

Brian Burns
2/5
Yetur Gross-Matos
1.5/5
Stephen Weatherly (Q)
1/5
Christian Miller (O)
0/5

Advice/Note: There are a lot of trust issues besides the fact that on paper this isn’t that solid of a matchup versus the Raiders week one. Deploying anyone in this unit, even Burns, would be a real risky venture so early in the season.

Saints Edge Rushers

Cameron Jordan
4/5
Marcus Davenport (O)
0/5
Trey Hendrickson
3/5
Carl Granderson
0.5/5

Advice/Note: The matchup is here for the Saints ERs versus the Bucs. If someone really has to “reach” for a play we can see that hendericks is appealing. But hopefully in week on no one is needing to go here.

Buccaneers Edge Rushers

Jason Pierre-Paul
2/5
Shaquil Barrett
2/5
Anthony Nelson
0.5/5
Quinton Bell
0.5/5

Advice/Note: Via the formula, IDP owners have two normally solid ERs off the board as far as inserting into our lineups. And all that we can say is don’t sit a stud, but hopefully, one or both of these guys aren’t your only studs to pick from.

NFC East

Cowboys Edge Rushers

DeMarcus Lawrence
2.5/5
Everson Griffen
1.5/5
Aldon Smith
1/5
Randy Gregory
0.5/5

Advice/Notes: It’s going to be really interesting to see how this talented squad plays out long term. As for week one, Lawernce should show signs of a resurgence if he is back to playing the blindside rusher as he did prior to 2019. Something that his IDP owners should keep in mind, “if”.

Giants Edge Rushers

Markus Golden
2/5
Lorenzo Carter
1.5/5
Oshane Ximines
1/5
Kyler Fackrell
0.5/5

Advice/Note: There is nothing to see here on paper versus the Steelers via the formula in week one. We’re moving on.

Eagles Edge Rushers

Brandon Graham
2/5
Derek Barnett (Q)
2/5
Vinny Curry
2/5
Josh Sweat
0.5/5

Advice/Note: There might be a new coaching staff in Washington, but that likely isn’t going to change the team’s offensive lines situation right away. Feel free to deploy them as marked via the formula. Noting, it’s a wait and see on Sweat’s role at this point.

Washington’s Edge Rushers

Chase Young
3/5
Montez Sweat
2.5/5
Ryan Kerrigan
2.4/5
Ryan Anderson
0.5/5

Advice/Note: As some readers might know, I do not suggest playing or leaning on rookies early on in a season. But versus the Eagles, it would even be tough for me personally not to have him in there via the formula working out on paper. Young should make an opening day statement and set the pace for his season this contest.

NFC West

Cardinals Edge Rushers

Chandler Jones
2.5/5
Devon Kennard
1.5/5
Haason Reddick
1/5
Kylie Fitts
0.5/5

Advice/Note: It’s not going to be a cake walk for Jones to make an impact this contest. The 49ers have an exceptional O line, and on paper it’s not as strong as we marked it for Jones. But he is a stud and he did split the series last year in producing versus the 49ers. To dig deeper, one contest he was held to 1 tackle and 1 sack. In the other he pushed threw for his owners and went 4 combined and one sack. We give him his dues and that earned him a half a star in a tough matchup via the formula.

Rams Edge Rushers

***Aaron Donald
2.5/5
Leonard Floyd
1.5/5
Samson Ebukam
2/5
Terrell Lewis
0/5
Clay Matthews
1/5

Advice/Note: One, Donald was not listed as an Edge Rusher, but I went ahead and listed in case he is in other sites after we had a bit of news he was practicing as such. Second, on paper, this has the worse matchup for this squad of all the Edge Rushers in the charts, at least so far. Third, it’s not much better for Donald as a general defensive lineman either, but how can we sit a superstar week one? It’s a tough one to make the call, good luck. And if this isn’t interesting enough, Ebukam has upside based on his role as a linebacker within the Rams system. So if it helps, don’t be surprised if he overachieves is base combined tackles, just temper expectations on more than one sack if he gets lucky versus the Cowboys.

49ers Edge Rushers

Nick Bosa
2.5/5
Arik Armstead
2/5
Dee Ford
1.5/5
Ronald Blair (O)
0/5

Advice/Note: So this matchup between the 49ers and Cardinals plays out the same from both side on paper. So I suggest reading the Cardinals notes and apply that here and just sub out Jones for Bosa. But, change the numbers a bit, because in two contest last season Bosa only recorded 4 combined tackles and no sacks mid-season last year versus the Cardinals. Hopefully he hits his stride early this year and gets to the QB and into the backfield this contest. Because it is that thinking in his development that earned him the solid designation.

Seahawks Edge Rushers

Bruce Irvin
3/5
Benson Mayowa
2.5/5
Rasheem Green
2/5
L.J. Collier
1/5

Advice/Note: There is no better way than to wrap up the last team in a chart by saying nothing more than, “as marker” and there is upside for someone to out perform their designation on this squad via the formula.
