Amani Hooker
So why is the Titans Amani Hooker an outlier of potential IDP production that’s never worked out well? And why is all that about to change?
Dime Dropped
From the time he entered the 2019 NFL draft, Hooker hasn’t even come close to making a dent as an IDP play. At least at any level any fantasy football manager really wanted when they acquire him. . He’s never anchored anyone starting defensive back line up. Nor has he even really hit an overall DB2 value. Coming close in 2020 as a deep DB2. He’s never broken 60 combined tackles in a season. And the weekly average hasn’t been nearly consistent enough. Only flashing from time to time.
Amani Hooked Left
Believe it or not. Did you know that the Titans have two very highly rated and graded safeties? That’s right. Not only do they have Kevin Byard patrolling the field at an elite level. The Titans had Hooker who was graded out as an elite flashing player in 2021 by some well-known resources. And this guy right here agrees after the film review. So what went wrong and why are we here now? 2019: Simple. Veterans Kenny Vaccaro and Kevin Byard we’re the obvious choice as starters over a 4th-round rookie.
2020: Veterans Vaccaro and Byard still were the best option for the team when healthy.
2021: The best breakout period to date. Vaccaro was released, and Hooker was the next man up to start. And of course, then a foot injury and later groin injury stifled the season.
Amani Hooked Up
We also know that realistically we have average linebackers in the box with Hooker on the field. In which we are assuming he wasn’t able to take advantage of last season with injuries lingering. And if you ask this IDP writer what all this adds up to. I’d say we have a great break-out or break-up a couple of tiers option. Depending on how you define such. And one we need to pay attention to and give more love in redrafts this year. And definitely in dynasty leagues. As Hooker is headed into his fourth season and looking to earn a paycheck. Don’t sleep on that chance he pulls it off. Because he’s displayed development that’s hard to come by at a potential and minimal cost.
I suggest trying a low ball offer in dynasty leagues while stamping a max DB2 draft and trade value on him. Sure there are risks. Just keep in mind that paying a DB2 price for him one way or another is full of tier-one upside. And we simply know that in standard and mid-deep leagues it’s pretty darn easy to recover if things don’t work out. I set the odds of Hooker making a statement this year at the highest level possible. So don’t be shy, grab those Hooker shares and enjoy.Or at worst, just knock him up your draft boards a little and then enjoy the ride.
