Menace Score

Measures the cumulative pass-rushing disruption a defender creates through sacks, pressures, QB hits, and tackles for loss.

Category: IDP · Status: Active

What it measures

Menace (Multi-Event Negative Action Cumulative Estimate) captures the full spectrum of a defensive player's ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Rather than focusing on a single counting stat like sacks, Menace aggregates all negative-yardage and disruption events to provide a holistic picture of pass-rush impact.

Inputs

  • Sacks: Total sacks recorded, weighted highest among all disruption events.
  • QB hits: Hits on the quarterback that do not result in sacks, indicating consistent pressure.
  • Tackles for loss (TFL): Tackles behind the line of scrimmage on rushing or passing plays.
  • Pressures: Pass rush attempts that result in QB hurries, weighted lowest among events.
  • Defensive snaps played: Total snaps used to normalize volume into per-snap efficiency.

Scale

  • Elite (top 5%): Dominant disruptors generating relentless pressure across all event types.
  • Strong (top 20%): High-impact defenders with consistent above-average disruption.
  • Average (20–60%): Serviceable pass rushers contributing at a league-average rate.
  • Below Average (bottom 40%): Limited disruption; may be replacement-level in IDP formats.

How to use it

  • In IDP leagues, use Menace to identify edge rushers who generate consistent pressure even when sack totals are modest.
  • Pressure rates are more stable year-over-year than sack totals - Menace captures this stability.
  • Compare Menace per-snap efficiency to identify snap-limited breakout candidates who produce at a high rate.
  • Pair Menace with Hawk Rate for a complete picture of defensive playmaking ability.

Limitations

  • Menace is heavily weighted toward pass-rush disruption and undervalues run-stopping excellence.
  • Coverage sacks and cleanup sacks are treated the same as wins against elite offensive tackles.
  • Snap count normalization can inflate scores for rotational players who only play in obvious passing situations.
  • Team defensive scheme significantly impacts individual disruption opportunities.
