Projected 2023 Workload
Christian McCaffrey is one of the most dynamic players in the NFL. He plays in the most running back friendly offenses in the NFL. These two statements should qualify him as the 1.01 in most draft formats. It’s important to note that the 49ers intend to use Elijah Mitchell and this could create some frustration. The good news is that a fresh CMC is the best version of him. While his touches per game may not be what they once were he’s still a threat in the passing game and in the red-zone. He should be viewed as a top 3 option at the position in 2023.

Career Arc
2023 could be a “down” year for most of the running back position. Many of the most productive backs in the league are now on the back side of their careers and this could help buoy a few players. Christian McCaffrey while still an electric player is now on a team that expects to play into February. This can lead to him seeing some limited touches when the 49ers have games in hand and Eli Mitchell is healthy. His 2023 projection is conservative but he should be considered an elite option at the running back position.
Career Workload Score
Christian McCaffrey is still an elite option but he is closer to the end than the beginning. The promising news for his long term outlook is that a large percentage of his work comes in the passing game which allows him to avoid many of the hits that a between the tackles running back might see. He is one more high volume season from being a player that fantasy managers should be trying to move off of their roster.

How to Deploy
In the short term (2023) Christian McCaffrey is an elite RB1. Beyond 2023 it gets a little murky though. His skillset allows him to be valuable fantasy asset longer than others, but it’s impossible avoid the eventual drop off. In dynasty formats, if you can trade him for a premium return then you should.
