Welcome to the Super Bowl LIV quick hits presented by Gridiron Ratings. Where we’ll be talking about either a Kansa City or San Francisco player that will be key in Sunday’s game. And will either need to step it up or do what they do best to help win the biggest game of the year. This year’s contest is as intriguing as it gets when it comes to personal on both sides of the football. And we’re going to break down some of those situations that will determine who’ll bring the Lombardi trophy home.
Linebacker Fred Warner #54
Fred Warner has been a key inside linebacker for the 49ers for the last couple of seasons. And they’ll need him at his best as a coverage linebacker this Sunday to help shut down the Chiefs high octane passing attack. Which his coverage skills just happens to be the better of the two main linebacker traits that Warner has.
According to PFF, Warner’s 2019 coverage grade was 78.5, 10th in the league among linebackers. And his nine incompletions out of being targeted 86 times are currently fourth at the position. He’ll need every bit of that skill set to contain the Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce Sunday.
Working in Warner’s favor is that according to the Football Outsiders the Chiefs run game is dismal. And they basically avoid using it which happens to be the only downside to Warner’s game, at times. But his read and react coverage skills can come in and help contain Patrick Mahomes. Who happens to be there best ground game player when he scrambles as a quarterback. And considering the 49ers top defensive line, Mahomes will be on the run often Sunday.
The outcome of this contest could fall into Warner’s lap because of all of this. And if he has a good outing in games, normally the defense has a great outing.
