Welcome to the Super Bowl LIV quick hits presented by Gridiron Ratings. Where we’ll be talking about either a Kansa City or San Francisco player that will be key in Sunday’s game. And will either need to step it up or do what they do best to help win the biggest game of the year. This year’s contest is as intriguing as it gets when it comes to personal on both sides of the football. And we’re going to break down some of those situations that will determine who’ll bring the Lombardi trophy home.
Cornerback Bashaud Breeland #21
The Chiefs will need Bashaud Breeland to step up big time in Sunday’s championship game. Because according to PFF, he is ranked the 99th overall cornerback from the regular season. And shedding light here, there are only 64 outside starting cornerbacks in the league. And if we add in the one slot corner per team on average, that’s only 96 in the NFL.
He and fellow cornerback Charvarius Ward (45th) “look” good on paper according to the Football Outsiders. By their account, Kansas City excelled against receivers lined up wide, with 6.8 yards allowed per pass (sixth) and -14.3% DVOA allowed (third). But those numbers are skewed according to PFF because Breeland had 21 dropped or off-target passes thrown his way by opposing wide receivers and quarterbacks.
Breeland only had eight passes defended and two interceptions the entire regular season, and now so far in the playoffs, he has just one pass defended. And those are not numbers a cornerback can brag about. The 49ers do like to run the ball but also have capable wide receivers they can utilize with Emmanuel Sanders, Deebo Samuel, and Kendrick Bourne. So if the 49ers can’t control the clock with the run game, they’ll turn to the passing attack. And Breeland will have to be better than just providing run support when that happens.
