IDP Free Agency Scenario Gauged

Descending Ascending

Malcolm Jenkins signed a 4 year, $32,000,000 contract with the New Orleans Saints, including a $9,000,000 signing bonus, $16,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $8,000,000. And all we can ask is, what about Vonn Bell? Well apparently they had an offer on the table, but Bell took to long. Or that’s the rumor that is flying around. I just wanted to get that out of the way.

On paper, this is a little confusing. Why would they jump from a 25-year-old to a 32-year-old Jenkins and pay him this type of money? As far as it sits right now Jenkins is the starting strong safety, and it’s tough to proclaim it is a stable situation on our free agency gauge. Sure, Jenkins will likely rack up a lot of DB1 contests for 2020 and 2021. But the likelihood he would maintain this will descend each and every contest he plays from this point on.

Jenkin’s situation just isn’t what it was when he was with a struggling Eagles defense. The Saint’s defense is simply a tier or higher better than Jenkins has enjoyed the last few seasons. And with that, there will be fewer opportunities for Jenkins to make plays. Or should we say, to clean up plays because the players around him are better now?

The Bottom Line

The IDP scenario is likely this, Jenkins won’t need to stick his nose into the mix as much as he had been. And at 32 years of age, he won’t want to. It is just highly unlikely the Saint’s scheme him exactly as they had been with the younger Bell. And we shouldn’t be surprised at all that the Saint’s would turn to another safety, in more three safety sets, to do the ln-box scheming. In other words, let the young guys get dirty while Jenkins acts as a general at the line directing traffic.
