Welcome to the IDP free agency gauge, where we’ll use an assortment of available information to gauge a player’s potential fantasy football outlook. And signed or unsigned, we’ll accumulate what we’ve learned in the process to gauge how to proceed from an IDP point of view with each player. So sit back and enjoy as the NFL ramps up their free agency period, and we break down those scenarios along the way.
IDP Free Agency Scenario Gauged
What’s not to like about Karl Joseph signing with the Browns? Nothing at all comes to mind. As it sits currently he’ll slide right in as the starting strong safety, one that needs to prove himself on what’s reportedly a one-year deal. And his IDP owners can breathe a little better knowing that he isn’t playing for Grudon anymore with the Raiders. Because for whatever reason, Grudon and Joseph just didn’t seem to jive.
And watch out, the Browns have dismantled a decent linebacker corp in front of where Joseph will be patrolling. Currently, with B.J. Goodson signed and looking like the starting middle linebacker for the Browns is nothing but another bonus. Of course, Goodson has to stick, but no reason at this time to think he won’t.
The Bottom Line
The IDP scenario is likely this, If Joseph can stay healthy, he’ll reach a solid DB1 tier. If nothing else, by production by default. But he has shown he has the chops to be a decent tackler when things are right with him physically. So if he can apply that same upside mentally to his game in Cleveland, we could be talking about triple-digit tackles guy by year-end. Our best suggestion would be to value him as a DB2, and just like when he entered the league, he carries unlimited upside. Because while Joseph needed this fresh start, his IDP owners needed this fresh start just as badly. And there wasn’t likely a better scenario that could have played out for us when he joined the Browns.
