Welcome to the IDP free agency gauge, where we’ll use an assortment of available information to gauge a player’s potential fantasy football outlook. And signed or unsigned, we’ll accumulate what we’ve learned in the process to gauge how to proceed from an IDP point of view with each player. So sit back and enjoy as the NFL ramps up their free agency period, and we break down those scenarios along the way.
Giants have re-signed ILB David Mayo to a 3-year deal, per source. (@DDuggan21 first with the news.) Signing gives the team some depth at ILB with Ogletree gone and Connelly on the mend. Plus Mayo played well last year, especially on special teams.— Patricia Traina (@Patricia_Traina) March 14, 2020
Giants agree to terms with David Mayo.— Tom Rock (@TomRock_Newsday) March 14, 2020
He can play inside linebacker, but like his namesake he ideally functions as a dressing and not the main ingredient in whatever sandwich the Giants are building.
IDP Free Agency Scenario Gauged
Inside linebacker David Mayo has resigned with the Giants after he made 82 tackles in sixteen games with thirteen as a starter. And became one of the team’s highest-rated defensive players by Pro Football Focus with a 72.8. Should we be excited? Not yet folks, let’s see what the contract looks like. It was reportedly for three years, but at the time of this article, the details are not available. And after looking at all available info I could, I’m not sold just yet.
Players can rise-up at times when called on, but it doesn’t mean they are all of a sudden a lock. He was not resigned by the Panthers for a reason after four seasons. Then signed by 49ers at the start of last season, only to be released and picked up by the Giants as a depth move and special teams guy. Just a little back history to think about at the moment.
Ok, so he did record some nice numbers last year as the Giants struggled to keep an aging Ogletree and healthy linebackers on the field. But we need to break down that production a little more and try and gauge what we have, as of now. Let’s not lose focus as we do of his 2018 numbers. We’ll also look for his 2018 PFF grade.
Completion Rate: 85. 7 (gross)
Missed Tackle Rate: 26.3 (yikes)
2018 PFF Grade: 50.6 (sad)
By The Numbers
In 632 total defensive snaps, Mayo averaged making a solo or assisted tackle every 7.7 snap he played, that’s a positive. And with 52 solo and 30 assisted tackles, he owned a less than 2/1 ratio, that’s not so good. So, the majority of his combined tackles came as assisted tackles and that’s not exactly good as far as IDP terms go.
Looking at his coverage, he had two passes defended when targeted 29 times, which is a very small sample overall for 632 snaps played. And according to the advanced metrics above, he allowed 19 completions in 29 targets, that’s about a 2/1 ratio. Again, a small sample, so he allowed 2 passes for every three balls thrown his way, not loving it.
At this point, we’ll break this down based on what his contract might look like. Normally this day an age, a starting linebacker would make at least 7 million a year, and that’s a soft guess with the NFL cap always being raised. So it’s this writer’s opinion and why I have him as stable, if he has signed for less a year, likely no chance they intend for him to open the season as a starter. And the stable is based on his career role as a special teams guy and depth linebacker. If it is more than 7 million, things look more promising and the stable is towards the idea he’ll be at least productive by default. And let’s not forget, even after we hear what the contract is, there is a lot of free agency to go through, as well as the draft.
In the end, he is a stable flier at this point and I don’t suggest anyone go chasing him if it’s going to cost you.
IDP Free Agency Update: Resigned
If this is 8.4 per year, we have a starter, if it is 8.4 for the entire three years, we should assume it is not as a lock starter.— Gary VanDyke (@TheIDPTipster) March 14, 2020
