11 Personnel: Alexander Mattison

Welcome to 11 Personnel, a series highlighting my favorite 2022 offseason trade targets! There’s something for everybody here. Many of these players are names you know but are undervalued. Whether you’re looking to add one more guy, trying to fix some depth woes or trying to rebuild with some low-risk, lottery tickets. This series will give you the jumpstart you need.

Today we’re discussing… RB Alexander Mattison, Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings drafted Ty Chandler, a running back I was higher on than most throughout the draft process, as with Mattison in 2019. The North Carolina (and Tennessee) product is a quality runner with great speed. That said, he’s a backup. Why draft a backup when you already have a good one in Mattison? The answer is: In preparation for Mattison’s inevitable departure, as he is an unrestricted free agent after the 2022 season. He has been a stud backup for the Vikings for three years now, showing steady growth in his play and his importance to the offense, in general. He’s still young and will turn 24 this June.  It’s a near certainty that Mattison is playing a more featured role within an offense in 2023. Make no mistake, he’ll be in a committee. It seems unlikely he would sign with a team that will make him a full #2.

The value here can vary a bit, but he is an instant RB2 in the event of an injury. Given he has a role in the offense beyond injury You can expect an RB3-level performance from him in 2022. While he’s currently an occasional flex play, he has massive upside. This could be and under-the-radar move to get in before Mattison’s value spikes next offseason. Then in 2023 you’ll have some flexibility as you can keep him or sell off for a profit.

What to Give:

Try starting negotiations with an early 2022 3rd but pay up to a mid-2nd. Be sure to ask for a dart throw 4th kickback if you do pay up that high. In terms of players to offer, letting go of Gabe Davis, Robert Woods, Miles Sanders, or Noah Fant for Mattison-plus would be a nice deal. I recently acquired Mattison and a mid-2022 4th for Kadarius Toney and an early 2022 3rd. You can find me on Twitter @thedevydirtbag and also on YouTube @thedevydirtbag _ Thanks for reading, catch you in the next one!
