IDP Free Agency Gauge: Signed Jeff Heath
Welcome to the IDP free agency gauge, where we’ll use an assortment of available information to gauge a player’s potential fantasy football outlook. And signed or unsigned, we’ll accumulate what we’ve learned in the process to gauge how to proceed from an IDP point of view with each player. So sit back and enjoy as the NFL ramps up their free agency period, and we break down those scenarios along the way.
IDP Free Agency Scenario Gauged
Let’s be clear here, gauged stable, well it’s gauged on what Jeff Heath has been for IDP purposes. And that is a solid DB2 option, and perhaps peaking into the low DB1 range. Shirt and sweet, it took watching what the Raiders did with all their free agency moves on defense to get signing Heath right. Because when the first move reported was signing him, one had to think ” Really?”!
So in the overall landscape of things, Heath looks like an off the top secure move. Heath hasn’t shown top tier talent coming out of Dallas. And the Gridiron Ratings, as well as the PFF grade of 68.0 for 2019, reflect that. Heath is a solid veteran who may not have the overall physical talent to take the Raider’s defense to the next level, but his mental aspect will help.
Being a long time veteran, Heath won’t make the mental mistakes that Grudon can’t stand. And is likely the reason he moved on from a younger Karl Joseph. Who actually was grade by PFF at a 69.9, but just didn’t seem to fit in since Gruden took over the Raiders a couple of seasons ago. And keep in mind, the Raiders had a lot of cap at the moment they signed Heath, who was PFF’s 149th ranked free agent. Cough cough….., Joseph was their 58th.
The Bottom Line
The IDP scenario is likely this, Heath will be an average solid DB2 production once again as a Raider, overall. Sure he’ll manage some contest by scheme or whatever the case as a DB1 here and there. But he simply doesn’t bring the talent to expand beyond that over the two inside linebackers in front of him. Cory Littleton and Nick Kwiatkoski simply have a back up in the middle of the field that mentally shouldn’t be caught out of position. Heath is a fundamental sound signing for the next couple of seasons, and IDP owners should look at it exactly the same way, veteran depth.
