Warning: IDP Free Agency Gauged As A ER/DE/DL!

Dante Fowler Jr. signed a 3 year, $45,000,000 contract with the Atlanta Falcons, including an average annual salary of $15,000,000.

Technically, Dante Fowler landing with the Falcons might see cut and dry, and it should be. But after entering the league as a defensive end drafted by Jacksonville, he played outside linebacker with the Rams in 2019. And the assumption is that he’ll play defensive end for the Falcons by most reports. And hopefully, this holds true for us IDP owners as well as the idea he can do a better job playing end than he did with Jacksonville.

By the way, we are going to cut him some slack about his earlier seasons at defensive end with the Jaguars. He wasn’t put into a prime position with Calais Campbell still in his prime and playing the weakside rusher. And we’ll point out another good thing when he was healthy he did manage decent production at the defensive end position we should expect from the strongside rusher.

The Bottom Line

The IDP scenario is likely this, as a defensive end, and given the right opportunity on the weakside as a rusher, Fowler has the makings of an ER, DE, and DL tier one. But, if for some reason the Falcons signed him with the idea he played outside linebacker very well with the Rams, and they think he is their schemed strong side linebacker, he’ll lose some IDP value. Actually, quite a bit of value, until further notice.

One, he’d likely lose his edge rusher designation in on most fantasy football sites. And two, 99.9% of strongside linebackers in the 4-3 scheme never reach more than an LB2 designation by production. So at this time, we should acquire him with the idea he’ll be that defensive end they have needed for some time now. And to be safe, look at him as a tier-two option in all designated positions. Because it would be better to have him over-perform, versus his cost than underperform.
