Super Bowl LIV Quick Hit: Jimmie Ward
Welcome to the Super Bowl LIV quick hits presented by Gridiron Ratings. Where we’ll be talking about either a Kansa City or San Francisco player that will be key in Sunday’s game. And will either need to step it up or do what they do best to help win the biggest game of the year. This year’s contest is as intriguing as it gets when it comes to personal on both sides of the football. And we’re going to break down some of those situations that will determine who’ll bring the Lombardi trophy home.
Free Safety Jimmie Ward #20
Jimmie Ward has had a sixth-year career resurgents in 2019 with the 49ers, and he’ll need to bring that mentality to the game Sunday. He hasn’t exactly done it as a game-changer, but he has done it in his fundamentals. And that will come into play when the 49ers secondary will try to contain the high-velocity passing game of the Chiefs.
The Chiefs will depend on their great pass-catchers Tyreek Hill, Sammy Walkings, and tight end Travis Kelce to get down the field Sunday. And with a quarterback like Partick Mahomes, they have mastered it as good as any team in the NFL. This will play right into Ward’s free safety position and where his fundamentals matter.
His ability to stay on the field this year and avoiding injuries has help elevated him into the top ten graded (85.1) safeties in the league as a sure-tackler, according to PFF. Of course, fans would love to have more game-changing plays from the veteran, like an interception on Sunday. And when the 49ers defensive line gets pressure and disrupts Mahomes, it could open the door for a possible mistake allowing Ward to take advantage. But his main role will be to limit the downfield yards through the air, and that’s what would help bring the title back to San Francisco.
