Super Bowl LIV Quick Hit: Daniel Sorensen
Welcome to the Super Bowl LIV quick hits presented by Gridiron Ratings. Where we’ll be talking about either a Kansa City or San Francisco player that will be key in Sunday’s game. And will either need to step it up or do what they do best to help win the biggest game of the year. This year’s contest is as intriguing as it gets when it comes to personal on both sides of the football. And we’re going to break down some of those situations that will determine who’ll bring the Lombardi trophy home.
Strong Safety Daniel Sorensen #49
Daniel Sorensen might be the most overlooked and key player for the Chiefs defense for Sunday. The six-year vet recently reentered the starting lineup after rookie Juan Thornhill (ACL) went down. And his role within the defense will be as important as any player they got in limiting the 49ers. Unfortunately, he isn’t a great player, but he is a good solid veteran player with experience.
As the third safety during the regular season, PFF graded Sorensen at a 61.5, 66th overall. Mentioning that missed tackles and his run support were hurting his overall grade. And these will come into play big-time during the game. And despite that grade, good or bad, the fans will hear his name a lot on Sunday because his role will ensure it.
He’ll be on the field 100% of the time supporting the Chiefs inside linebackers trying to stop the run game. And the team rotates those linebackers a lot to get the job done, and he’ll be there absorbing the opportunities to make plays. As a sign this will likely happen, over the last two playoff games, he has led the team with sixteen combined tackles. And the Chiefs will need Sorensen to turn some of those opportunities into big plays Sunday if they’re going to bring the Lombardi trophy home.
