11 Personnel: Mac Jones

Welcome to 11 Personnel, a series highlighting my favorite 2022 offseason trade targets!

There’s something for everybody here. Many of these players are names you know but are undervalued.  Whether you’re looking to add one more guy, trying to fix some depth woes or trying to rebuild with some low-risk, lottery tickets. This series will give you the jumpstart you need.

Today we’re discussing… QB Mac Jones, New England Patriots

Kirk Cousins is a popular comparison for Jones. To me, that’s a floor comparison. Jones handles pressure and big moments far better and processes the game at a higher level. I see a quarterback more similar to Matt Ryan.

Jones gets a lot of flack for being unathletic, but the concerns are overblown. He moves plenty well in the pocket and is capable of some play extension outside of it. He won’t get you rushing points, but he’s one of the most accurate passers in the game. That accuracy will see him compile stats at a rate you’d expect to see with Cousins or Ryan.

In superflex, I have Jones valued in the same tier as Breece Hall (2022 1.01), Jaylen Waddle, Tee Higgins, Davante Adams, Travis Kelce, and ahead of Trey Lance.

Mac Jones is valued similarly to the 1.01, but you can get him for cheaper than that.

In one of my leagues, I moved 2022 1.05 plus Jimmy Garoppolo and Kadarius Toney for Jones. This is a superflex rebuild. Pairing Jones, who can be a fringe QB1 alongside Zach Wilson provides a young stud duo to build around.  When these guys both break out the QB position will be locked down.

How to get him:

If you need a QB and are looking at Kenny Pickett with a mid-1st, try turning that pick into Jones instead. It may be necessary to add a throw in to push the deal over the top. A player like Jimmy G could be the kind of “expendable” that you may need to throw in to make it happen.

If you don’t want to spend premium draft capital to get Mills there are plenty of players that you can move and get Mac Jones in return.  The list includes Dalvin Cook, Nick Chubb, Saquon Barkley, and Terry McLaurin.
