11 Personnel: Jared Goff

Welcome to 11 Personnel, a series highlighting my favorite 2022 offseason trade targets!  There’s something for everybody here. Many of these players are names you know but are undervalued. Whether you’re looking to add one more guy, trying to fix some depth woes or trying to rebuild with some low-risk, lottery tickets. This series will give you the jumpstart you need.

Today we’re discussing… QB Jared Goff, Detroit Lions

To be very clear, don’t expect Goff to be a league winner for you. If you have a solid team and you’re not in a position to draft Kenny Pickett Goff is a nice consolation prize. Goff is a cheap, quality QB3 you can plug in on bye weeks or in the event of an injury. There are worse places to invest a 2022 2nd rounder or equivalent player.

How to get him:

Start with a mid-2nd or a player like Kenny Golladay and tack on lesser assets as a sweetener if necessary. I traded pick 2.01 and Jonnu Smith to get Goff in one league. Pickett was off the board and my biggest weak spot was that all-important QB3 in a superflex league. That price is obviously more than the mid-2nd I’m advising to lead with. It may have been an overpay but I put my money where my mouth is. I would rather roster Goff over any of the rookie quarterbacks not named Kenny Pickett. Given his cost and floor compared to Desmond Ridder, Matt Corral, or Malik Willis. The odds of any of these rookies seeing the field this year is slim – and them having success is even slimmer. Make the deal for Goff. Goff finished as QB24 in fantasy in 2021. While not impressive it was his first in Detroit. He did it with one of the worst receiver groups in the league except Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Moving Forward:

In year two with the Lions, Goff, will have TJ Hockenson back, and the emerging St. Brown, entering his 2nd year. The additions of Jameson Williams and DJ Chark will improve the Lions pass catcher situation. It’s also important to remember that D’Andre Swift is a talented receiver at running back who will be a factor as well. Look for a QB14-18 finish for Goff in 2022, and for the Lions to play themselves out of contention for Bryce Young or CJ Stroud in 2023. Translation: Goff may get a 3rd year in Detroit. If he doesn’t, then he’ll certainly earn a starting gig elsewhere. You can find me on Twitter @thedevydirtbag and also on YouTube @thedevydirtbag _ Thanks for reading, catch you in the next one!
